Project Boomerang
A self initiated initiative to up-cycle booth fabrics from Atlassian's events, giving them a purposeful second life post event.
Salvaging 8,712 sq in of booth fabric in 2025, and 95,640 sq in of fabric in 2026.
Context
The project was initially conceived for a team hackathon in 2022. While I wasn’t able to fully bring the project to life then, I felt that it was a worthy idea that had be revisiting the project until it was produced at Atlassian’s flagship event in 2026.
Role
Creative direction | Research | Project management | Vendor management
Process
I revisited the project in a hackathon in 2023, using test prints from past event to make prototypes of potential items that can be gifted or sold at future events.
I also explored various avenues for the items to be distributed, as gifts for event attendees, bring a piece of a flagship event to a non-flagship event. Another idea I was exploring was to work with the onboarding team, using the booth fabric to produce onboarding gifts.
The catalyst
The project really gained momentum after the success of Work Life Tarot, the booth’s striking visuals were just too good to go to waste. After the event, I salvaged the booth fabric and sewed multiple tote bags for the team in celebration of the successful launch.
That was when the potential of the booth materials really started to catch the eyes of different program owners. Noticing the opportunity, I pitched the idea to a few teams in attempt to find a chance to pilot the project.
The pilot
Working with the company’s sewing club, I worked with fellow hobbyists sewers to sew as many bags as we could in time for the upcoming event.
The tote bags were featured at Atlassian Foundation’s booth at team ‘25 Europe in Barcelona. They were offered in exchange for a charitable donation with any of Atlassian’s Foundation partners.
The tote bags were all claimed on the first day of the event, proving that there was an appetite with our attendees for the bags, and it also gave us a good benchmark of how much attendees were willing to purchase them for.
With the success on-site at the event, the Atlassian Foundations team worked with me to salvage as much fabric as we could with the intention of running the same program again at the next event.
